Leadership = Reduce Uncertainty

  • Give the group a mission (ideology)
  • Give the group something to do (purpose)
  • Give the group something to focus on (me)

One Minute Management

Goal Setting

  • "Help people reach their full potential - catch them doing something right"
  • Agree on goals
  • See what good behavior looks like
  • Write out each goals on single sheet of paper less than 250 words
  • Read and re-read goals often
  • Take a minute each day to reflect on performance
  • See if behavior matches goals

Praisings

  • "People who feel good about themselves produce good results"
  • Tell people up-front that you're going to let them know how they're doing
  • Praise people immediately
  • Tell them what they did right - be specific
  • Tell them about how you feel good when they did something right, and how it helps the organization and others who work there
    • Give moment of silence to let feelings be felt
    • Encourage to do more of the same

Reprimand

  • Tell people up-front that you're going to let them know how they're doing
  • First half:
    • Reprimand people immediately
    • Tell them what they did wrong - be specific
    • Tell them about how you feel when they did something wrong
    • Give moment of silence to let feelings be felt
  • Second half:
    • Shake hands
    • Remind them how much you value them
    • Reaffirm that you think of well of them, just not of their performance in this situation
    • When the reprimand is over, it's over.
  • "The best minute I spend is the one I invest in people"
  • "Goals begin behaviors, consequences maintain behaviors"
