  • Bits = Quarks, Electrons, Photons, Neutrinos (position, velocity, nuclear spins)
    • Few more bits out there than atoms

  • Quantum mechanics guarantees that any physical system with finite energy confined to a finite volume of space has a finite number of bits (distinguishable states).

  • "Information is physical".

  • Computation in which a bit not only registers a 0 or 1, but also acts as an instruction: 0 means do this, 1 means do that.
    • Significance of a bit depends not on just its value, but on how that value affects other bits over time.
    • Meaning is only defined relative to a scheme of interpretation.

  • Universe computes itself.

  • Copying / Reproduction
    • Asexual = mutations are deadly
    • Sexual = mutations not as deadly

  • DNA is the mold
    • Finite information (DNA strand)
    • Infinite output variation (all of life)

  • Compression & Encryption
    • Could supply meaning with information, instead of both sides already having interpretation.

  • Logic gates / ops
    • NOT, AND, OR, COPY

  • Energy
    • Comes from quantum fields - underlying fabric of universe
      • the weave makes up the elementary particles (photos, electrons, quarks)
      • energy was drawn out of quantum fields by expanding of universe.
      • gravity (pulling force) sucks energy out of expanding universe (expanding force) yin/yang
      • positive energy drawn from fields is exactly balanced by negative energy of gravitational attraction

  • Laws of Thermodynamics (Energy & Information)
    • 1st Law
      • Energy is conserved - it can take different forms, but is never lost
        • Heat, work, electrical energy, mechanical energy. radiant energy in photons/light, mass energy in protons/neutrons/electrons.
        • The more energy that is applied to information, the more change/calculation can occur, the faster computation is accomplished.
        • Can only compute as fast as you put energy into the process.
    • 2nd Law
      • Entropy is the information contained in a physical system that is invisible to us (requiring energy to make visible)
        • Measure of the degree of molecular disorder existing in the system
        • Random bounces of atoms requires lots of information to describe
        • Amount of visible information always increasing, amount of stable energy is always decreasing
          • If tried to reverse process, and take used energy and make it free energy, would leave you with lots of extra bits and nowhere to put them.

  • Initial state of universe (pre-big bang) = no alternatives = 0 bits of information

  • Early universe was almost uniform - quantum positions/velocities/energy densities don't have exact values = they fluctuate (quantum spookiness).
    • Gravity took these tiny variations, exaggerated them over time, until we have the clumping of modern atoms as we see them today. (Chaos Theory effect - butterfly)
      • Gravity clumping things created free energy in those pockets
    • All of current reality, then, was shaped by unexact quantum positions/velocties/etc at the beginning of the universe. If they would have been any different, modern reality would be drastically different.
